For the past years, virtual simulation has been introduced as a complement towards clinical education. However healthcare educational institutions were not ready to fully teach remotely. Covid-19 outbreak has reinforced the potential behind softwares such as Body Interact, a virtual patient simulator that enables today and tomorrow healthcare professionals to develop their clinical reasoning and decision-making skills.
Available in multiple devices, Body Interact has stepped in the podium of distance learning solutions during the times where clinical rotations are suspended. Educators have been able to accelerate clinical exposure by providing a full experience – both online classroom type and student’s individual practice and evaluations.
Body Interact is a dynamic simulator with a physiological algorithm that enables users to observe and understand how their decisions have an impact on the patient’s health condition, in real-time. It is easy to use and very intuitive, offering a range of difficulty levels and complexity. Therefore, Body Interact serves different schools of healthcare professions – Medical, Nursing, EMS, High Schools, enhancing their learning experience in their simulation labs.
In order to facilitate remote ongoing practice and evaluations, the Body Interact Learning Management System – BI Studio – allows educators to track students’ progress and performance. It combines the possibility to provide both physical or virtual training as well as in-person or online evaluation sessions.
How it works
A recent study has shown that Body Interact improves knowledge retention by 20.4% when compared to traditional methodologies. Gamification improves new learners engagement and empowers students to develop further their clinical decision making skills and confidence in a safe environment.
Body Interact users are completely responsible for the diagnosis and for the treatment plan according to the patient’s needs and health condition. From dialoguing with the patient, completing an ABCDE assessment, or requesting tests, users can also call other specialities, administer medication, and be responsible for their own clinical decisions.
After each scenario, the feedback section provides a step by step review of the user’s actions and how it has impacted on the patient’s health condition. Furthermore, the user can review the clinical competencies that has been exposed and learn the actions that were missed, while performing the clinical scenario.
Body Interact integrated tools
The current outbreak not only has taken students from their schools, but also has limited their clinical rotation plans and simulation centers activities, reducing the possibility of practicing their theoretical knowledge on patients.
Body Interact offers important integrated tools that facilitate remote ongoing practice and evaluations. The Body Interact Learning Management System – BI Studio, allows educators to track students’ progress and performance. It combines the possibility to provide both physical or virtual training as well as in-person or online evaluation sessions during the lockdown period. Additionally, educators can select specific scenarios (according to the teaching objectives) for students to train individually or in group, anytime and anywhere, testing their skills and knowledge, and contributing towards team building and role play.
