Since 2023, Åland University of Applied Sciences (Högskolan på Åland) has used Body Interact across Nursing and across Nautical Science, Energy Design; Automation, Maritime Technology and Engineering, pairing digital scenario work with manikin simulation and the ABCDE approach.

2020
Across nursing, maritime and engineering education, Åland University of Applied Sciences uses Body Interact to give students a safe space to try, reflect and make mistakes, building clinical reasoning and the ABCDE approach before it counts in real practice.

PRACTICING CLINICAL REASONING EVERY SEMESTER
Jenny Österbacka · RN, MPH | Lecturer · Nursing Programme · Åland University of Applied Sciences
Body Interact is used across all semesters of the Nursing programme. Sometimes the whole class works through a scenario together, with the teacher leading and students suggesting next steps; at other times, students work in small groups, pausing to discuss decisions and look up concepts they’re unsure about.
It’s also part of simulation training (Simtegration): students complete a Body Interact scenario, then run the similar scenario on a manikin with matched vital parameters , followed by group reflection and, for independent work, written reflections on their clinical approach.
“Body Interact has become a valuable and appreciated part of our teaching, supporting both student engagement and the development of clinical reasoning skills.”

BRINGING CLINICAL REASONING TO SEAFARERS AND ENGINEERS
Anna Lundberg · RN, Med.Lic. | Lecturer · Nursing Programme and Maritime Technology · Åland University of Applied Sciences
Used across all medical care courses in these programmes, plus mechanical/electrical engineering and external courses for working professionals. Each cohort starts with a facilitated group walkthrough, including the platform’s introductory video, before moving into small-group practice with Simtegration.
Because these students don’t share a nurse’s pharmacology background, medication sections are taught in a group setting with instructor guidance , keeping every learner engaged.
“Body Interact is a valuable complement to our teaching for the seafarers. It helps students and participants practice clinical reasoning, communication, diagnostics and the ABCDE method in an environment that feels safe for them.”

HOW IT STARTED, AND WHAT’S NEXT
Åland University of Applied Sciences was introduced to Body Interact through Anna Lundberg, RN, Med.Lic., who attended a course at Mälardalen University in Sweden, where the platform was already in use. Looking ahead, Body Interact is expected to become even more deeply integrated into Åland’s academic programmes as the platform continues to evolve.
FAQ
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How does Åland University of Applied Sciences use Body Interact?
Across all semesters of its Nursing programme and across its Nautical Science, Energy Design and Automation, Maritime Technology, and Mechanical and Electrical Engineering programmes, combining teacher-led group scenarios, independent small-group practice, reflection, and manikin simulation.
What is Simtegration?
Simtegration connects Body Interact’s digital virtual patient scenarios with physical manikin simulation: students complete a scenario on Body Interact, then run a matching scenario on a manikin with comparable vital signs.
