On the 5th edition of the SIGMA European Conference, Body Interact promoted a webinar with 4 international nursing educators where they were invited to share their opinion and experience within the use of virtual patients.

Leila Sales, one of our speakers, is the most recent educator using Body Interact on the panel. With a more complex and demanding healthcare field, more informed patients and students with different interests and learning paces, educators need to find new tools and strategies that can help them doing a better job.

For the coordinator of the Nursing degree course at the Escola Superior de Saúde da Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa as a serious game, Body Interact “brings realism and innovation to the classroom”. Moreover, it attracts students as it “allows them to make mistakes and to do their self-analysis of competencies and enables a debriefing session with the educator. Everything without harming the patient”.

Leila also underlines some important benefits of using the Virtual Patient Simulator:

In general terms:

  • Improves attention retention
  • Enables a simpler way of learning
  • Builds clinical reasoning, critical thinking and clinical judgment
  • Improves decision-making skills
  • Promotes self-confidence, motivation for learning and satisfaction with their own performance
On the simulation itself, it leads students to build a structure thinking. It helps them:

  • Evaluate objective and subjective data
  • Train the observations and the physical examination assessment
  • Manage the security measures
  • Implement the interventions and
  • Set priorities

Why students from the Escola Superior de Saúde da Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa love Body Interact?

“Body Interact is a great tool and allows learning in many different ways.
On the one hand, by pausing the scenario it gives me time to carefully think through the case, or even do some research on the clinical guidelines.
On the other hand, it also empowers me to practice under pressure, if I decide that I won’t be pausing the scenario”

Sara Reis, 4th year Nursing Student

“I find it to be an excellent tool to practice and improve critical thinking and clinical decision-making.
Hearing, for example, the monitors, the sound of respiratory difficulty, creates an impact, emotions and
makes us feel the real pressure. Just as we would feel in a real-life situation”

Maria Ferreira, 4th year Nursing Student
